Helloooooo Hoomans!
Colene is selling our house. To allow potential buyers to wander through it, she had this great idea to drive 9 hours to Lubbock so we wouldn't get in the way. I just love car rides! But sheesh...9 hours is a little long for a dog. And it gave me lots of time to think about what I wanted to tell you about next! And this is it.
This is a vintage bedroom set that Colene upcycled and refurbished. It was boring ugly and old when she got it. Now it's Hollywood Fab!
This is called Waterfall furniture. It came about between 1920 and 1940 (The Great Depression) and was some of the first furniture made from plywood covered with veneer making it less expensive to manufacture and therefore less expensive to purchase.
The name Waterfall came from the distinctive feature of a horizontal curve on the front of the piece. Isn’t that a cool feature?
This furniture was also called Newlywed Furniture. The Great Depression was a tough time, you know. People couldn’t find jobs or worked for very menial wages just to survive. That didn't stop love though! Couples still fell in love, they just couldn’t afford to live anywhere except a bedroom in their parents home. So the one thing they could call their own was their bedroom furniture. This set could be purchased for somewhere around $40.00. WOW!
Now that you have the history on Waterfall Furniture, let me tell you about THIS set in detail.
Back in the day, the beds were only full size. No Queens and Kings like today, this set came with the headboard and footboard, and due to the size thingy, Colene decided to upcycle them into something else, like special home decor.
OK, so back to these specific pieces, the chest and the vanity had quite a bit of peeling veneer that was either removed entirely or reglued and clamped. Do you know what veneer is? Colene told me it's a thin layer of fine wood that is glued on over less attractive wood. Makes it look more expensive and holds the cost down. Both pieces also got the once over and any loose joints were glued and screwed. This is done to tighten it back up to its original sturdiness. Then a super sanding and thorough cleaning. Lots of refurbishing went into this set.
There once was a mirror on the vanity, long since gone so Colene made a one-of-a-kind hand cut decorative topper to replace it. You would never know it wasn’t always like that.
Then she went to work with some Dixie Belle Collard Green paint and highlighted everything with Dixie Belle Steel Magnolia metallics to give it that Hollywood Fab glow. Wish you could see this in person and how the light just bounces off that silver. I may just be a dog, but that is so cool! The natural wood was lathered in hemp oil and the painted horizontal surfaces were sealed with polyurethane for durability.
The vanity also has etched mirrors on the horizontal surfaces and one kind of at an angle just below that cool new decorative topper. So if you don’t think this is a piece of Furniture Art, then the only taste you have is in your mouth.
And one more thing you’re probably going to freak out over - THEY ARE ON WHEELS!
