Helloooooo Hoomans! Lucy here!
Sometimes I get really hot when I'm laying in the yard - this is Texas after all. So I convince Colene to take me for a ride in the car so I can help her look for broken down furniture on the side of the road. It's so awesome because she rolls down the back window and I can hang my head out so the wind cools me off. And then BLAM! She slams on the brakes and I get my head konked as I fall back into the seat. This means she spotted a prize!
The side of the road pieces are not usually real prizes in my opinion. Nevertheless, she opens the back and loads it in and off we go again. If its garbage pick up day we may get two or three pieces! Then home we go and I run in the house for drink of cold water and she unloads our finds of the day.
This table was a freebie - what a transformation!
These pieces usually need a lot of work. Bondo, gluing and clamping. Usually new hardware is needed and most definitely sanding and painting. Sometimes they even have bugs! You should see Colene with the bug spray! Wowzer! Those bugs don't stand a chance.
Anyway, so that's one place to find furniture in need of love. It can be really fun and when the piece is finally finished, the Before and After pics blow you away!
Colene is constantly looking on her phone in the evenings when we are suppose to be snuggling. She's checking Facebook Marketplace, Next Door, Craigslist and some Garage Sale sites. If its a really good piece she pays them right away with Paypal or Venmo or Cashapp and we go get it the next day. You never know when the piece you are looking for will pop up, so browse the sites often and be ready to jump on it if you see something that strikes your fancy!
The next place to look is Goodwill, Thrift Stores, Resale Shops and Junk Shops. Same story with these places, you need to stop by often because if its a good piece it won't last long. Cruising by these places is part of what Colene and I do together because we both think its fun. Sometimes I have to stay in the car with the air conditioning going, and that's OK as long as I get to GO!
Then, of course, there are ACTUAL garage sales. These open up mostly on Friday mornings. Be there early with a pocketful of cash and ready to haggle. Estate sales are a lot like garage sales, check those out too. On Sunday they usually mark everything down because they want to clear it all out, just a little tip from a dog in the know.
Two more places very worthy of mentioning are Antique Stores and Consignment Shops. As you might guess, things might be a little more expensive here and they will likely be in a little better shape. So if your time is valuable and you don't want to do a bunch of fixing, this might be the places to look.
Here's the deal. If the piece makes your eyes light up, get it. There's always a way to scrape it, sand it, fill it, fix it, update it and paint it to be exactly what you imagined when you first saw it.
Now get out there and get to hunting! Colene is standing by to help you restore that piece to a beauty beyond your wildest imagination!
PLEASE check out Lucy's Furniture Creations for a gallery of sold and available pieces. There’s also a group of pieces that are NAKED and ready for customization!
